Occupation
Duncan was a blacksmith, as noted on the death certificates of his sons John and Alexander. Alexander was a blacksmith, as was his son Duncan. There were two smithies not far from the village centre. One, Hammersmith (a reference to the noise, according to the Ordnance Survey names analysis) was located on the main road to Stirling east of Port on a farm called Ballabeg. In 1851 it was operated by Duncan’s grandson, the son of Alexander. (This younger Duncan left the Port area and was working as a blacksmith in St. Ninians by 1861). The second smithy was a few yards from the village, and may have been operated by one of the other sons after Duncan sr. died.
Death
Duncan died 22 October 1830, Port of Menteith. Margaret’s death is unknown. A memorial erected in the Port of Menteith churchyard by their son Alexander memorialized Duncan and the deaths of two of Alexander’s children at a young age. This memorial provided sufficient data to eventually establish the relationship of Duncan and Margaret as the parents of John McNie.
